About the course
Course Overview
Explorations in Careers invites middle school students to begin an exciting journey of self discovery and possibility. Designed for grades 6–8, this self paced online course helps learners explore who they are, what they enjoy, what they value, and what they do well, and connect those insights to the wide world of careers. Using the RIASEC interest inventory framework, students build a deeper understanding of their personalities and preferences while discovering how those traits align with real world opportunities.
Across eight engaging modules, students investigate all 16 national career clusters, gaining exposure to a broad range of industries and occupations. Rather than pressuring students to choose a single path, the course emphasizes exploration and growth. Students learn that uncertainty is a natural and healthy part of the career development process. Through guided research activities, interactive reflections, and portfolio building exercises, learners practice analyzing job responsibilities, required education and training, workplace environments, and future outlooks for various careers.
The course also highlights multiple pathways to success, celebrating apprenticeships, trade programs, certifications, military service, entrepreneurship, and two and four year college options. Students examine the skills and preparation needed for different careers and begin developing practical workplace readiness skills such as communication, professionalism, collaboration, and self presentation.
By the end of the course, students will have created a personalized career action plan that includes short term and long term goals. More importantly, they will leave with increased confidence, curiosity, and the tools to continue exploring as they grow. As an asynchronous online course, Explorations in Careers allows students to work at their own pace while building lifelong skills in research, planning, and self awareness that will support their academic and professional journeys.
