About the course

Course Overview

Explorations in Agriculture introduces middle school students to the science and systems that sustain the world’s food supply. Designed for grades 6–8, this self paced online course builds scientific understanding through real world agricultural contexts, helping students see how biology, environmental science, and sustainability connect from farm to fork.

Throughout the course, students investigate plant biology in depth, exploring plant structures and functions, the plant life cycle, and the process of photosynthesis. They examine soil science, nutrient cycles, and the environmental conditions that support healthy plant growth. By connecting these concepts to working farms and food production systems, students gain a clear understanding of how scientific principles operate in everyday life.

Students also explore sustainable farming practices and the role of agriculture in environmental stewardship. They analyze how farmers balance productivity with conservation, manage natural resources responsibly, and respond to challenges such as climate change and food security. The course highlights how agriculture influences communities, economies, and ecosystems on both local and global levels.

Aligned to Next Generation Science Standards and national agricultural literacy outcomes, the course supports academic growth while introducing diverse agricultural career pathways. By the end of the course, students will have strengthened their scientific reasoning skills, deepened their understanding of food systems, and gained appreciation for the innovation and responsibility involved in modern agriculture.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify plant structures (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, seeds) and explain how they function together in growth, reproduction, and survival
  • Construct scientific explanations for how environmental factors (light, water, nutrients, temperature) and genetic factors influence plant growth and agricultural productivity
  • Explain how photosynthesis drives the cycling of matter and flow of energy from sun to crop to consumer, connecting plant biology to food production
  • Model how nutrient cycles, decomposition, and organism interactions (beneficial insects, soil microbes, pollinators) support healthy agricultural ecosystems
  • Evaluate competing solutions for maintaining biodiversity, conserving natural resources (soil, water), and sustaining agricultural productivity over time
  • Trace the journey of food through production, processing, and distribution systems, identifying how agricultural practices ensure safe and reliable food supplies
  • Analyze how agricultural activities impact natural resources and design or evaluate methods for minimizing negative environmental effects while meeting food production needs
