About the course

Course Overview

Explorations in Digital Arts introduces middle school students to the creative and technical foundations of visual design and digital communication. Designed for grades 6–8, this self paced online course uses free browser based tools including Canva, Pixlr, Figma, and Photopea, so no software installation is required. Students can begin creating immediately while learning industry relevant skills in an accessible environment.

Throughout the course, students explore essential design principles such as composition, typography, visual hierarchy, and color theory. They learn how these elements work together to communicate meaning, guide audience attention, and create visually compelling projects. Emphasis is placed on developing a deliberate creative process, moving from ideation and planning to drafting, feedback, and iteration.

Students gain hands on experience with image editing, layout design, UI and UX basics, and infographic creation. Each module builds practical skills while encouraging thoughtful design choices and problem solving. Learners analyze examples of effective visual communication and apply those insights to their own original projects.

Digital ethics is woven throughout the course, with clear instruction on copyright, attribution, fair use, and responsible content creation. By the end of the course, students will have developed a portfolio of digital work, a strong foundation in design thinking, and the confidence to use digital tools creatively and responsibly in academic and real world contexts.
