About the course
Course Overview
AP Environmental Science offers students an immersive experience in studying the interconnections within natural and human-made environments, equipping them with the scientific knowledge and analytical skills to address complex environmental issues. This course, equivalent to an introductory college-level environmental science class, covers a broad spectrum of topics such as ecosystems, biodiversity, population dynamics, climate change, water and air quality, energy resources, pollution, and sustainable practices. Students examine how these factors interrelate, influencing both local and global systems, and explore solutions to mitigate human impact on the planet.
Throughout the course, students engage in hands-on labs, field investigations, and data-driven exercises to observe ecological processes and assess environmental challenges. From analyzing water samples and studying soil composition to examining case studies of conservation efforts, students apply scientific methods and critical thinking to real-world scenarios. These activities are designed to help students make connections between theoretical knowledge and practical applications, fostering a comprehensive understanding of environmental science.
As students progress, they develop skills in data analysis, research, and problem-solving, learning to interpret trends, make predictions, and evaluate the effectiveness of environmental policies and conservation strategies. The course emphasizes the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship, encouraging students to think critically about the impact of human choices on the environment.
This course has been authorized by the College Board® to use the AP designation.
