Introduction to Cryptocurrency

Intro to Cryptocurrency begins by answering the question students most often ask: what actually is cryptocurrency, and why does it exist? Students learn how digital currency differs from traditional money, where it came from, and what problems it was designed to solve. From there, the course turns to the technology underneath — exploring how blockchain makes cryptocurrency possible by creating a tamper-resistant record that no single party controls.

About the course

Course Overview

Intro to Cryptocurrency begins by answering the question students most often ask: what actually is cryptocurrency, and why does it exist? Students learn how digital currency differs from traditional money, where it came from, and what problems it was designed to solve. From there, the course turns to the technology underneath — exploring how blockchain makes cryptocurrency possible by creating a tamper-resistant record that no single party controls.

With that foundation in place, students move into the practical world of crypto markets. They learn how to buy and sell cryptocurrency safely, how to evaluate exchanges, and how to manage the risks that come with a volatile asset class. Secure storage becomes its own focus, as students compare wallet types and learn why protecting a private key is as important as protecting a bank password.

The middle of the course broadens the picture beyond Bitcoin. Students survey the wider ecosystem of networks, altcoins, and tokens — comparing major platforms, understanding what drives differences between them, and developing a vocabulary for talking about crypto with accuracy. Market literacy follows, with students learning to read price charts and data without getting swept up in speculation or fear.

The course closes with two of the most consequential skills in the crypto space: recognizing fraud and building a strategy. Students study the anatomy of common scams — from phishing to rug pulls to social engineering — and develop habits that protect their assets in practice. In the final module, they synthesize everything they have learned to construct a personal crypto strategy grounded in their own goals, timeline, and risk tolerance, rather than hype or peer pressure.
