About the course

Course Overview

Explorations in Artificial Intelligence introduces middle school students to one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving fields in technology. Designed for grades 6–8, this self paced online course guides learners through the Five Big Ideas of AI: perception, representation and reasoning, machine learning, natural interaction, and societal impact. No programming experience is required, making the course accessible to all curious learners.

Throughout the course, students explore how artificial intelligence systems perceive and process information, from recognizing images and speech to identifying patterns in data. They examine how AI represents knowledge and makes decisions, and they gain hands on experience training simple AI models to see how machine learning works in practice. By engaging directly with interactive tools and simulations, students build both conceptual understanding and practical insight into how AI systems are developed and refined.

Students also investigate real world applications of AI across industries such as healthcare, transportation, entertainment, and communication. As they explore these examples, they consider not only what AI can do, but how it shapes the world around them. Ethical reasoning and responsible AI use are emphasized throughout the course, encouraging students to think critically about fairness, bias, privacy, and the broader societal impact of intelligent systems.

The course culminates in the design of an original AI project proposal, where students apply what they have learned to imagine a thoughtful and responsible AI solution to a real world problem. By the end of the course, students will have developed foundational knowledge of artificial intelligence, strengthened their critical thinking skills, and gained confidence in exploring emerging technologies that are shaping the future.
